How the Audubon Environmental Program Works

Golf Communities in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program

Hammock Dunes, FL
Hammock Dunes, FL: Creek Course, Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

What the Program Is: Founded in 1991 as a cooperative effort between the United States Golf Association (USGA) and Audubon International (which administers the program), the ACSP is designed to encourage homeowners, golf courses, schools and businesses to register their land and buildings as cooperative sanctuaries and take action to protect water, conserve wildlife habitats and manage resources wisely.

The Program’s Goals: The ultimate goal of a program member is to become a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. This designation means that a course has been granted Certificates of Achievement by Audubon International in six categories: Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Public/Member Involvement, Integrated Pest Management, Water Conservation and Water Quality Management.

What the Program Isn’t: Audubon International is not related in any way to the National Audubon Society. There are more than 500 Audubon groups operating in the U.S.. Many of them are affiliates with, or are chapters of the National Audubon Society, but quite a few, such as Audubon International, are completely independent.

Who Belongs: Currently, about 2,200 golf courses in the United States and internationally have been registered as members of the ACSP. These courses are involved in a variety of programs to protect and enhance the quality of their environments, such as providing habitat for endangered species, recreating prairie communities, and providing nature trails, nest boxes and bird feeders.

How the Courses Are Recognized: Golf courses work towards certificates of recognition in six categories. Audubon International provides each golf course with one-on-one assistance in devising an appropriate environmental plan.

A good sign for the future of the environment.

What Are the Six Categories? The categories are as follows:

I. Environmental Planning
Each club generates a written plan outlining their goals and proposed projects. It provides a useful tool for clubs to monitor their progress in meeting their goals.

II. Wildlife and Habitat Management
Management of non-play areas is crucial to providing habitat for wildlife on the golf course. Emphasis is given toward maintaining the best possible habitat for the course considering its location, size, layout, and type of property.

III. Outreach & Education
Gaining the support of golfers for an environmental program is an invaluable asset. Focus is placed upon generating public awareness through education. Recognition of tasks well done continually reinforces the worth of the program.

IV. Integrated Pest Management
A comprehensive and responsible program to control pests will ensure a healthy environment for both people and wildlife. Managing turf areas with environmental sensitivity requires educating workers and members about plant management, pesticide application, and use of fertilizers.

V. Water Conservation
Consumption of precious water resources remains an issue at most golf courses. Attention is directed toward irrigation systems, recapturing and reuse of water sources, maintenance practices, and turfgrass selection.

VI. Water Quality Management
Questions about the impact of golf course chemical use on the water quality of lakes, streams, and groundwater sources abound. Strategies are devised to monitor water quality, protect wetlands, reduce erosion, filter runoff, and, if warranted, improve conditions.

Are the Courses Under Any Restrictions: No restrictions are placed on the property as a condition of participation in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. However, Audubon International does have a set of standard management practices which must be met in order for certification to be granted. All decisions concerning the implementation of program suggestions remain with the golf course superintendent and course officials.

What Do the Courses Pay: Each course pays a $150 annual fee to participate in the program. Among the benefits that clubs receive are A Guide to Environmental Stewardship on the Golf Course, a 130-page book that provides information on how to implement the program, a Certification Handbook that helps course personnel plan, organize and document their efforts, and a one-year subscription to Stewardship News, Audubon International’s bimonthly newsletter.

How Many Courses Have Completed the Program: Nearly 500 golf courses in the U.S., and 72 worldwide have received full certification by fulfilling the requirements in all six categories.

Note: Look below to see if your club is a member. Highlighted links are to golf course communities hosted on GolfCourseHome.net. Not all members of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program are listed. The Audubon International website: www.auduboncommunities.org.
