The Woods
Course has long been a favorite of visitors and members alike
to the Kingsmill complex, which boosts three championship
courses, as well as the Bray Links Par 3 that we developed
between the
Conference
Center
and the
James River
.
The course opened in 1994, and Curtis Strange, a two-time U.S.
Open Champion and a Ryder Cup Captain, is a resident of
Kingsmill and was my design consultant on the project. The
River Course designed by Pete Dye hosts the Anheuser Busch
Classic, and Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay designed the Plantation
Course.
The beauty of The Woods Course is that are no surrounding homesites and it is strictly just a golf course, featuring large
ponds, steep ravines and mature hardwoods.
Favorite Hole
One of my favorite holes is No. 18, which plays 462 yards from
the Gold tees, 429 yards from the Blue tees, 395 yards from
the White tees, and down to 333 yards from the Red tees. This
is one of the toughest finishing holes in all of golf, as it
requires a slight draw from the tee to avoid the large Beech
trees on left, as well as the three flanking bunkers to the
right of the landing area.
You are then
faced with a 200+ yard shot into a green protected by a pond
on the right, which is bordered by a large waste bunker that
surrounds the whole right and rear portion of the green.
On the left and short of the green you can bailout by aiming
at a small pot bunker, which guards the back left terrace. A
par on this hole is a welcome conclusion to an enjoyable day
of championship golf.
