The Good Things Remain
Twenty years ago, when I was an editor for World
Tennis magazine, I visited Hilton Head Island
for the annual Family Circle Cup tennis
tournament. It was a week I never forgot. Chris
Evert and Martina Naratilova were there, as well
as a young kid named Pam Shriver who showed that
she was a talent to be reckoned with.
Over the
years other young upstarts such as Tracy Austin,
Andrea Jaeger and more recently, Anna Kournikova,
have made a splash there and the exciting
unveiling of the next rising became a tradition.
Its hard to believe that the FCC will
celebrate its 28th anniversary next
year. But thats the way the island
isthe good things about Hilton Head remain.
You could say the same thing about Sea Pines
Plantation and the Sea Pines Real Estate Co.
Its been more than 40 years since the
firms founding amongst what was then a
sleepy, Lowcountry collection of plantations.
The
island has certainly grown up since then and the
Sea Pines Real Estate Co. has had a lot to do
with it. The leading real estate company on the
island since 1956, it was recently ranked 5th
overall in the state of South Carolina. More than
$4 billion in sales transactions have gone across
the desk at Sea Pines Real Estate co. and since
the end of 1998 it has averaged more than $1
million a day in sales.
Native Wildlife & Golf
While tennis and golf stars have been lighting up
the courts and fairways here for years, the real
attraction is the island itself. Wide sandy
beaches, warm southern sun, and a vibrant
ecosystem thats been carefully preserved
are the reasons nearly 2 million tourists travel
to this 12-mile-long haven each year.
The
marshes, forests and beaches are home to more
than 350 species of native American birds,
including snowy egret, large blue herons, ospreys
and white ibises, plus youll also see
loggerhead turtles, deer and alligators.
Hilton Head Island has the worlds
highest concentration of golf coursesmore
than 23, plus 12 more on the adjacent
mainlandmaking it one of the countrys
premiere golf destinations. Three of the island
courses are ranked among the nations top
100, including the famed Harbour Town Golf Links
at Sea Pines Plantation, which hosts the PGA
Tours MCI Classic-The Heritage of Golf each
year.
There are other Hilton Head names that
youre sure to recognize, places such as
Shipyard, Palmetto Dunes, Port Royal, Wexford,
Indigo Run and Daufuskie Island. One name you may
not recognize is that of the new Cross Island
Parkway. It is a welcome addition to the
traffic-pressed roads that allowed me to zip from
one end of the island to the other on a recent
trip back to the island last January.
Shopping & Dining
Shopping and dining are a popular combination
here, too. With 570 retail stores, three factory
outlet shopping centers and numerous Island
boutiques, youll work up quite an appetite.
More than 200 restaurants assure you that
youll find something to dazzle your palate.
To get a good idea of whats for sale on
Hilton Head Island, write to the Sea Pines Real
Estate Co. and ask for its free, 64-page, color
magazine called Portfolio. It features
hundreds of home listings, new development news
and more. Write to: Sea Pines Real Estate Co., 32
Greenwood Dr., Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.
And when you go down for a visit, look up a
pair of old school chums of mine: Rob Reichel,
the former Director of Tennis at Sea Pines,
Shipyard and Port Royal, is one of Sea Pines Real
Estate Co.s top producers, and David
Warren, Sea Pines Director of Marketing.
Warren is proud to point out that Sea Pines Real
Estate Co. now has 100 sales executives in 15
offices throughout the Lowcountry. Both Rob and
David visited the island some years ago on
vacation and never left. The island continues to
have that effect on people. --David Lott
